Sparkle
Sparkle is a project for men and women in Dorset with a learning disability.  For two years college staff and foundation degree students have been working with staff and people attending day centres across the county to develop drama skills.  Throughout the project individual day centres have each produced several of their own plays that have been performed in their local communities.

The project culminated in a performance of The tempest in which each centre performed one scene from the Shakespeare play, bringing a new and moving dimension to this well known work.

Get Set, Go!
Weymouth College is undertaking a new community based learning project in which skills training is available for people living in the Weymouth and Portland area who are currently not working,  plus upskill training for people who are already employed within the Tourism, Hospitality, Construction and Retail sectors.

The project - Get Set, Go! is the first of many initiatives that aims to help the borough prepare its future workforce for the demands of 2012 and beyond.

Co-ordinated by Lynne Kerley, the project is already well underway and working with a number of community groups and local businesses in the area to provide 'Taster' training in the above range of vocational areas.  Also available are language taster sessions for individuals and businesses.  On completion of a taster course Lynne and her colleagues in the Weymouth College Guidance team will signpost participants to further training opportunities that will help them achieve their longer term goals.

The Big Fish  18th May 2007
120 budding artists from local primary and secondary schools in the Chesil Education Partnership area joined forces with Weymouth College Arts Department and created a giant fish sculpture that now proudly takes a prime position in the College grounds.

School children from Bincombe Valley School, St Andrew’s Primary School,
St Georges School, St Johns School, All Saints School, Wey Valley Sports College, Budmouth Technology College and Royal Manor Arts College attended workshops over a three month period to bring to fruition a massive project that involved the creation of over 1000 scales.  Each are individually hand-tied to the giant fish structure which is 5 metres long and 2 metres high.  Over 125 kg of clay and 8 recycled copper water tanks were used to make the scales of before they were each individually hand pained and enamelled by the students.  350 recycled drinks cans were also used to make some of the scales.

The children, accompanied by their teachers made good use of their time at the College and took part in a ‘Big Quiz’ designed to take them around the College and enabled them to see the range of facilities and to have some fun at the same time before finally enjoying a fish lunch in the College restaurant. The College music students provided entertainment during the lunch.

Laura Jones (10) from St Andrew’s Primary School said:” Seeing the fish unveiled was great.  It looked much nicer than I thought it would and also so much bigger.  I have really enjoyed taking part in the workshops and I am proud to have made 4 scales for the fish.”

Sarah Colwell, Project Manager at Weymouth College said: “ Every year we do a different project on a ‘Big Theme’, last year it was the ‘Big Picture’, this year the ‘Big Fish’.  We enjoy these projects just as much as the children who take part and are already planning for next year’s Big Project. We are very grateful to Aim Higher for their sponsorship and support that enables us to work on these fantastic projects.”

It’s My Life
An excellent partnership project for Aim Higher, Weymouth College, the NHS Dorset Schools and Youth Services.
The film was made at Outlooks Family Centre, Portland with a group of very young mothers and fathers.  It takes the form of a documentary programme that examines the highs and lows of teenage parenthood, and informs the viewer about the range of contraceptive devices currently available.  The project participants, steered by Outlooks staff and Weymouth College lecturers have produced a carefully balanced well edited piece of work with a poignant message to teenagers.  Featured in the DVD are young people whose education has been stopped short through early parenthood talking about their aspirations to return to learning.

Filmed, produced and directed by young people and starring the teenage parents themselves, It’s My Life has been reproduced 150 times for schools and Youth Clubs in Dorset and will be embedded into the school PSHE curriculum.

Along with advice on how best to kick the habit, SmokeStop can also offer patches, gum and other assistance on prescription.

Giving up with help from your local NHS Stop Smoking Service is by far the most effective way of stopping and staying stopped. During 2006 nearly 500 people from Weymouth and Portland made the decision to come to SmokeStop for help giving up – so you are not alone. For more information or for details on your local sessions visit www.dorsetsmokestop.co.uk or call 0800 00 76653.

Working in Partnership for a Safer and Secure NHS
Dorset PCT’s Security Management Service was formed to identify the scale of violence towards NHS staff and take action against offenders. Its main area of work is tackling violence, anti-social behaviour and harassment of NHS staff. We believe that our staff and patients deserve to work and be treated in safe and secure environment. As such those who commit offences in the NHS will be referred to the police and the NHS will give full support for prosecutions. Where necessary, the Trust will consider taking legal action such as private prosecutions, injunctions and ASBOs.

004 Crime Disorder Reduction Partnership
In 2006/07 Western Dorset Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership was allocated funding to help to reduce crime in accordance with Dorset’s Local Area Agreements’ five outcomes.  These are as follows:

  • to reduce the levels of crime in Dorset by 15%

In order to meet these priorities the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership commissioned 31 projects in 2006/07, including:

High Visibility Clothing
(Drink Safe Street Safe Scheme) - Weymouth, Portland, Lyme Regis, Sherbourne, Bridport, Dorchester
Licensed premises are well known as locations for alcohol related violent crime and disorder, including incidents of theft and criminal damage. Free sailing tuition
sailing boats racing

Sailing project to encourage 11 – 16 year olds to experience the joy of sailing in partnership with Weymouth Sailing Club.  Weymouth and Portland Housing will be purchasing a Sailing Dingy and will be sponsoring WPH tenants’ children to undertake RYA qualifications. Staff at WPH are very supportive of the work Weymouth Sailing Club do amongst young people in the borough and are keen that this should become a long-term partnership. Initially this project will last for 3 years with WPH and Weymouth Sailing Club working closely together. Though the current events are only planned for young people between the ages of 11 to 16 years of age, we will be considering offering a scheme to older tenants if we can see a demand.

Phil Samways, from Weymouth Sailing Club (WSC), said “we at WSC are pleased and excited about the partnership as it is a new venture for us. We hope to encourage young people that sailing is not only fun but a sport for all ages to take part in.”

To get the project started WPH and Weymouth Sailing Club are offering some taster sessions on 23rd of May, the 6th and the 27th June, from 6.30 to 9pm. You will need to pre-book, so please get in touch early, as places are limited. To book your place, or for further information on this project, please contact Richard Gray, Tenant Involvement Coordinator on 01305 206920, or email richard.gray@wphousing.co.uk. WPH will be following these taster sessions up with further sailing events in the summer.

Kevin Dey told us how; “This is an exciting project which I very much hope will give children on our estates an opportunity to enjoy and experience one of the best locations for sailing in the world. It will help them to grow in self-confidence and allow all of them access sailing to whatever level they wish to achieve.” Kevin went on to say, “I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of such an exciting and worthwhile project.”

Working with the Paracademy, with funding from Dean and Reddyhoff, the PCP organised for 12 young people from the area to carry out their level 2 RYA powerboat training.  These youngsters will also do first aid training and radio training. The PCP hopes to attract more money to enable other young people to benefit from the scheme.

Sailing - The PCP worked with year 10 students from Portland and was successful in a bid to the Youth Opportunties fund enabling the students to carry out the remainder of their sailing classes.  The PCP also donated £500 to this.

A recent successful PCP fundraising dinner raised in excess of £4,000 and the Partnership donated £1,500 to four local youngsters who are attending a global UN youth conference later this year in New York.

Chesil Education Logo

015 Chesil Education Partnership
The aims of the CEP are realised and developed through a plethora of projects and
activities across a range if initiatives and agendas. The work of the CEP is multidimensional; it enthuses and inspires change through a collaborative approach to
challenges coupled with innovation and clear thinking.

Chesil is a soft federation of all 28 schools and colleges in and around Weymouth and
Portland, Dorset. The Partnership was formed by Head Teachers and Principals
frustrated with a lack of support from the then LEA, a hope that the sum would be
stronger than the parts and shared commitment for the achievement of individual
learners not individual organisations. It was launched in January 2004 and continues to
win hearts and minds by doing and achieving rather than waiting and hoping.
Chesil has achieved much in a short time in Inclusion, Attainment, Transition, CPD,
ECM, ICT and key Government initiative development

The main objective of the project is to enable people to adapt and repair their properties so that they can carry on living in their own homes.  We work with people living in the private sector, owner-occupiers and private tenants. We offer a comprehensive housing advice service visiting people in their own homes so that we can get an accurate assessment of their needs and how we can help them. We help locate sources of finance for work needed and can assist them through the entire process to completion.   We advise on benefits and refer people on to other services available in the district. We have our own technical officers who will oversee any building work and ensure people aren’t ripped off by unscrupulous builders overcharging or carrying out poor quality work.

027 Citizens Advice Bureau

Weymouth and Portland Citizens Advice Bureau provides advice about a wide range of issues including debt, benefits, housing, employment, consumer and relationship breakdown. We carry out case-work when appropriate, or help to support clients to deal with their own problems. The Bureau can, in a very limited number of cases, provide representation at benefit tribunals or in court for housing repossessions. The service is provided from the main office at Mulberry Terrace as well as a number of outreach sessions outlined below:

For clients registered with the following GP surgeries there are weekly sessions at: Lanehouse, Wyke Regis Health Centre, Royal Crescent Surgery (including patients registered with the Preston practice). For residents of Portland there is a weekly service at Portland Hospital.

These outreaches can provide advice and assistance on any issue. Appointments need to be made with the practices, or Hospital.

There are separate projects that have more restrictive criteria and can only provide advice and assistance on a limited range of issues, appointments for these projects need to be made with the main CAB office:
Home Visiting Project: deals with housing and benefits queries. Clients must be caring for someone who is housebound, or be housebound themselves. The Adviser will visit the client in their own home. There is no age restriction.
Help the Aged/British Gas Home Visiting Project: deals with benefits only. Clients must be aged over 55. The Adviser will visit clients in their own homes, although the clients do not need to be housebound.
Financial Inclusion Fund Debt Project: deals with debt issues only. The Adviser can provide detailed case-work or on-going support for clients with debt problems. Home visits can be provided but appointments will generally be held in our main office.

Homelessness Prevention/Tenancy Support: deals with the prevention of homelessness. This can take the form of liaison with landlords/other agencies on behalf of tenants, or negotiations with mortgage companies if the client is a home owner and experiencing financial difficulties.

028 Bournemouth Churches Housing Association

Bournemouth Churches Housing Association are significant players in the housing field. Directors of B.C.H.A. sit on the executive committee of Weymouth and Portland Housing Forum.
Valuing both staff and the individuals with whom we work, is integral to our approach. Melcombe House in Weymouth is a fine example of our innovative and solutions based approach to housing.

Melcombe House is a 15 bed supported accommodation scheme for people who are homeless, with priority given to local people. At the scheme individuals receive tailored support, the aim being to promote independence as opposed to dependence.

Partnership working is the key to our success, as we continue to work closely with other professionals in the statutory and voluntary sector. So enabling our residents to receive a true ‘joined up’ service. Many residents undertake voluntary work, thus also benefiting the communities in which they live. A Resettlement Officer is based at the scheme and helps clients access rent deposits, bid for local authority housing, and access appropriate move on.

People can find themselves disadvantaged within the housing field for many reasons. At BCHA a proactive approach is taken, with a strong emphasis on partnership working. One such example being our partnership with Signpost Housing who provide high quality accommodation as part of a planned ‘move on’ process from Melcombe House. The Resettlement Officer provides support to people living at the properties.
